PRESENTS

Shari Phoenix is a contemporary artist based in Barbados who challenges and confronts societal representations of women and People of Colour through highly detailed watercolour paintings. Born in 1997, she earned her Associate's degree in visual art in 2016 and her Bachelor's in fine arts at the Barbados Community College.

Phoenix's art aims to deconstruct and interrogate prevailing perceptions of the Black body, notions of beauty and perfection, and the recurring use of caricature. Her body of work encompasses three distinct themes: "Grotesque Eve," "Pin Up Rebel," and "Are You Offended?" Each series raises various questions, sparking essential dialogues about the underlying themes in her art.

Phoenix's work has gained international recognition, with exhibitions at renowned events such as the Prizm Art Fair in Miami and collaborations with Auttrianna Projects. She has also contributed her artistic talents to the Barbados National Cultural Foundation's Mural Project at its headquarters.

More about the series:

The "Pin-Up Rebel" series is a bold confrontation against the historical representation of women, as shaped by the male perspective, through a profound reconstruction of the female form via costume. Pin-up girls have long symbolized the idealized and mass-produced woman, often presented through a lens catering to men's consumption.

This series also boldly occupies the space of Carnival, asserting it as a space that is free and liberating. Here, the female representation undergoes a metamorphosis through costume as a powerful means to deconstruct and challenge the rampant over-sexualization of the perfectly idealized femininity prevalent in vintage pin-up posters. Through this artistic representation, the body is liberated from the confines of perfection, emerging as an over-exaggerated rendition of humanity's most innate form.

Within the framework of the poster, the character becomes an embodiment of the costume, giving rise to the topsy-turvy world of Carnival, where the figure enjoys a newfound sense of freedom.

This project acts as a beacon of liberation for the female form, which has long been dictated by the male gaze and perspective. As articulated in my artist statement, the "Pin-Up Rebel" series wages a bold war against the way women have historically been portrayed by men. This is achieved through a reconstruction of the female form using costume, which in itself presents a naked woman in her most natural state but in an exaggerated form.

The reference to Pin-up girls and their posters serves as a poignant symbol of the idealized and mass-produced woman, as seen through the lens of male representation for male consumption. The "Pin-Up Rebels" actively rebel against the notion of the idealized female form, seeking to cultivate fresh perspectives on individual perfection while rejecting mainstream standards of beauty and perfection. It underscores the significance of women embracing their freedom and taking pride in their natural bodies, in all their natural glory.

The core project encompasses the original Pin-Up Rebel posters, complemented by prints of these posters, which adorn the gallery walls, overlapping and engulfing the pristine white canvas. This arrangement is designed to initiate a thought-provoking dialogue regarding the consumption of the "perfect" female body, as historically defined by men. This compelling concept confronts the limited freedom women have historically had to express themselves without enduring the scrutiny and criticism of men. It's an ongoing conversation, one that demands resolution in favor of women, who should rightfully control how they are perceived.
